Additional Exception – ‘BAG’

Personal items such as clothes, toiletries, medicine, souvenirs, games, etc. are generally covered by EAR’s personal baggage exception, ‘BAG’.

The BAG exception also covers certain personally owned electronic devices, tools, instruments, or equipment.

BAG exception allows a U.S. person and their family members traveling with them (who are also U.S. persons) to take these items for personal use as “tools of trade” when you travel.  As per EAR §740.14(b) through (g), there are restrictions on travel with these items.

*Cornell University does not provide template letters for the BAG Exception and recommends you consult with your personal legal counsel for international travel with personally owned electronic devices, tools, instruments or equipment.
